Rail vs Cycle Trail? It can be both!

Residents across Armidale and Glen Innes are asking a simple question. Why haven’t the councils properly investigated building a cycle trail without removing the existing rail line?

Armidale Mayor Sam Coupland has claimed that building a cycle trail off the rail formation would cost 2–3 times more — yet when asked to provide evidence, none has been presented.

Meanwhile, many locals point out there are existing roads running parallel to the rail corridor that could support a cycle trail without ripping up critical rail infrastructure.

We already have examples — the Parramatta to Carlingford corridor — and Oberon to Torana trail on the side of rail line showing that both rail and active transport can coexist.

What’s missing here isn’t feasibility — it’s political will.

Right now Armidale Regional Council is pushing ahead with plans to lease the corridor for a cycle trail from Armidale to Ben Lomond by June 2026.

$21 million is the estimated cost — funding that has not yet been secured.

$500,000 of ratepayer money + $600,000 from an unknown external source is already being spent on preliminary works.

NSW Public Works has been contracted, including Aboriginal cultural heritage consultations.

But here’s the reality: this approach has failed before, and there’s little evidence it will succeed this time. in the New England.

Over 5,000 people have signed a Change.org petition opposing the removal of the rail line

The issue is deeply dividing the community

Recently, rail advocates in Armidale  met with Mayor Coupland, councillors, and the General Manager to push for a collaborative, future-focused solution. Unfortunately, the Mayor’s response was to continue on the current course.

That’s not good enough.

Preserves the rail corridor for future transport

Supports cycling and tourism

Brings the community back together

The GNR rail corridor belongs to all stakeholders and residents of New England — not just one vision held by 2 local councils.

Because regional unity and long-term transport vision matter more than pushing through a divisive plan.https://change.org/SaveNorthernRailLine
