New Jobs in New England

This region of northern NSW has been badly neglected for decades because it hasn’t been a marginal seat in either the NSW or the Australian parliaments.

This has resulted in massive under investment in the region compared to Tamworth, Wagga Wagga, Bathurst-Orange and Albury Wodonga.

Glaring evidence of this neglect can be seen in the closure of the Great Northern Railway line north of Armidale, which went all the way to the QLD border at Wallangarra. It was closed as a result of a report commission by the Greiner coaltion government in 1988.
By 1993 there were no freight or passenger services north of Armidale

The New England now needs new jobs if it is to be able to retain its young people after they complete secondary and tertiary education. One of the best ways to attract new investment in businesses and jobs between Armidale and the QLD border is to provide rail freight services. Otherwise investors are usually more likely to consider new plants and investment in SA and VIC, whose state governments are more likely to offer freight services on their existing rail infrastructure.

New England has lots of space and a relatively low population density. But the only freight solution available to new investors is by diesel powered trucks, which have already wreaked havoc on the main roads and highways through New England, namely A15 and B76.

Two optimistic examples are now surfacing for new local jobs taht will benefit residents of Guyra and New England generally.
