Major Road Routes Table

  1. The New England Region has two rail corridors.

The Main North Line from Tamworth to Wallangarra is currently unusable north of Armidale. The corridor is intact but needs considerable repair. The corridor in not officially closed.

The Moree Grafton Line via Inverell and Glen Innes  is in an unfinished state east of Glen Innes. The Moree to Inverell section is usable

  1. Wallangarra to Tenterfield and Brisbane
  2. QLD is planning to build a new line to the Sunshine Coast costing $37 billion
  3. Hunter Rail Line
  4. The rail needs of South East Queensland are currently being reevaluated by the Queensland Government as there is considerable passenger need in addition to the freight needs.
  5. Inland Rail line project

Inland Rail is a 1,700km priority infrastructure project for the Australian Government being mainly undertaken by the ARTC. It will require 475 kilometres of upgrades to existing tracks and 399 kilometres of new tracks in NSW and will provide a fast freight backbone from Melbourne to Brisbane that’s transforming how goods are moved around Australia. The aim is to provide journey times of less than 24 hours from Melbourne to Brisbane.

The Inland Rail will better link businesses, farmers and producers to the national supply chain network, enhancing market access and generating new opportunities for industries and regions. Containers will be heavily utilised to move freight efficiently and quickly with the track capable of double stacking.

The Inland Rail line is not intended to facilitate passenger train operation.

Construction in NSW includes: –

❖ 185km of upgraded track from Albury to Illabo.

❖ 37km of new track and 2km of upgraded track from Illabo to Stockinbingal.

❖ 170km enhancement of specific sites between Stockinbingal to Parkes.

❖ 99km of upgraded track and 5km of new track from Parkes to Narromine.

❖ 306km of new track from Narromine to Narrabri.

❖ 184km of upgraded track and 2km of new track from Narrabri to North Star.

❖ 25km of upgraded track and 14km of new track from North Star to the New South Wales/Queensland border.

The route in Queensland is yet to be finalised however there is strong pressure for the Inland Rail line to extend directly to Gladstone and its Port.

A route to Brisbane via the New England was discounted in the early planning stages however there are some advocates calling to revisit this option given the time delay to construct the Inland Rail, its cost blow out and freight needs of SEQ.

Armidale, Inverell and Wellcamp operate commercial passenger services to Brisbane and Sydney although air fares are large. Wellcamp operates high-capacity international air cargo services.

Newcastle International Airport is also gearing up to expand its air freight capacity and destinations.
