Passengers
The Explorer train service to and from Armidale station is not counted by the normal barrier counts or Opal data. This severely restricts the public availability of passenger numbers for each station. It seems that ticket sales provide some total journey statistics.
Passenger observations indicate that each service has about 35 passengers with about 17 transferring to the Glen Innes coach service and a further 5 going further on to Tenterfield.
At maximum a three car Explorer train has a seating capacity of about 140 passengers which include two disabled wheel chair spaces.
Passengers often say the train was “full” but this can rarely be substantiated.
Freight
A guide to household freight is 1.5 tonne of freight per person per annum.
Hopefully the NSW Freight Review will provide some data and or potential sources of data.
New England Network members have been observing truck movements, truck size, configuration and attempted to gather data on tonnes of freight. From their periodic observations over many months It is estimated that road freight moves about 3000 tonnes per day up and down the New England Highway.
Much of the road freight is local wholesale fruit and vegetables being transferred to distribution centres and major wholesale markets. A lot of southbound traffic is being transferred from the Stanthorpe region to the Sydney markets and distribution centres.
